Blood Pressure Monitors for the Home

Having a normal blood pressure is desirable but unfortunately not always possible due to a number of factors contributing to hypertension (high blood pressure) or hypotension (low blood pressure), in addition to temporary ups and downs in blood pressure, only measurable with blood pressure monitors.

Caffeine, nicotine and stress tend to raise blood pressure temporarily, permanently in the long run, physical activity tends to lower it, and doctors consider that it will be always be preferable to have a slightly low blood pressure while it is not so low to cause health problems or damage organs.

People who practice an exercise or physical activity on a regular basis, and particularly all body builders and athletes, have a typical low blood pressure that sometimes needs to be watched by using blood pressure monitors at home due to the fact that they may exceed the healthy limits when exercising in excess

Monitoring your blood pressure at home is not only easy but also highly recommended by doctors, therapists and other health professionals, whether you need to check it for medical, fitness or preventative reasons, with the advantages that you do not need particular skills or knowledge self-testing your blood pressure readings.

There are several types of blood pressure monitors, which your doctor or even the pharmacist may recommend, to find the type of device more suitable to your particular needs. Each monitor includes printed instructions to learn how to use it, and usually a number to receive further orientation or mini courses.

Otherwise, your doctor or any nurse can teach how to use blood pressure monitors at home. In addition, you need to learn a few things to avoid before you actively start to measure your blood pressure. Even at home, you need to observe the basic measure you take when you have your blood pressure taken at the doctor's office.

Go to the bathroom before you measure, and do not consume alcohol, tobacco or caffeine products at least 30 minutes before using the blood pressure monitors. Do not talk and take a rest 3 to 5 minutes before measuring your blood pressure, and sit in a comfortable position, with your back supported and legs and ankles uncrossed.

Relax and place your arm raised to the level of your heart on a table, wrapping the cuff smoothly and comfortably around the upper part of your bare arm, leaving enough room for you to slip one fingertip under the cuff. Make sure that the bottom edge of the cuff is around 1 inch above the crease of your elbow.

Now you are ready to measure your blood pressure at home, even on a daily basis, just by following the simple directions included with blood pressure monitors or given by the doctor or nurse.
