Detection and Treatment of Low Blood Pressure

When it comes to low blood pressure, only the doctor can determine if you have a significant lowering in your blood pressure. Contrary to high blood pressure, hypotension has symptoms but when a patient shows signs of dizziness or lightheadedness, however, it does not necessarily mean there is the need for treatment.

Due to the fact that symptoms are similar to those caused by many other underlying conditions, it is necessary to visit the doctor, in order to identify the cause of your low blood pressure and then be prescribed with the right medication. Once again, a repeated evaluation like that of hypertension should be performed.

The doctor will typically look at your medical history to find out your age, specific conditions suffered previously and under which symptoms they occurred. The evaluation of low blood pressure and pulse rate is taken after you have been lying down for at least five minutes, and then stand up quietly for one minute and up to 3 minutes to check up postural hypertension.

Other tests may be performed, including some intended to measure heart rate or rhythm problems. At the doctor's request an echocardiogram may be performed, along with different blood tests to look for anemia, sugar or other problems.

Treatments of low blood pressure vary, although more often it is enough to prescribe changes in diet and lifestyle. Such changes include eating a diet higher in salt, get regular exercise to promote blood flow, avoid heavy lifting, and avoid straining while on the toilet and drinking lots of non-alcoholic fluids.

To improve your blood pressure, doctors may recommend the intake of sports drinks, because these beverages are high in sodium and potassium, both highly recommended during exercising, or to those individuals who live in locations with hot climates.

Extra salt in your foods is beneficial for people suffering from low blood pressure. More salt and drinks are widely recommended while a person is sick with any viral illness, including a cold or flu, as well when the weather is hot. If you are taking over-the-counter medication, tell the doctor so he/she can evaluate the medicine.

In addition, if you are susceptible to low blood pressure, be careful every time when you rising from a sitting or prone position. You can improve your circulation and wellness, stretching your feet back and forth before standing up, and then proceeding slowly.

Because low pressure may occur after meals, do not take low blood pressure drugs before meals, and try eating smaller and more frequent meals, resting after eating to lessen episodes of dizziness.
